“NEW” and Old Combine to “ReNEW” Hiram House in 2007
 |
by
Russell R. Grundke, Executive Director |
As the year closes, I keep looking back on the last twelve months. One word seems to sum it up. That word is “NEW”. This adjective summarizes the many great things that happened at Hiram House in 2007.
These include the third new Log Cabin, our new Board of Trustees President and officers, new Program Director, the new Heifer Classroom, along with our new and old friends, clients, donors and supporters of our annual Pumpkin Festival, Benefit, School and Summer Camps, Retreats, Campership Fund, Capital Campaign and other programs.
Each of these new facilities, people and groups have made this 111 year old Northeast Ohio institution “NEW” in all aspects.
This renewal was accomplished by dedication, hard work and diligence on behalf of the Hiram House Board of Trustees, Staff and our numerous Volunteers and Supporters.
For this, I salute each of you and all that is “NEW” at Hiram House!

The year-round cedar structure can accommodate up to fifty campers overnight in two main dormitory wings equipped with bunk beds. It also features a winterized sun porch, central activity room, handicapped access, state of the art fire safety systems, plus separate sleeping quarters, shower and restroom facilities for supervisory staff.
The new Log Cabin opened in May for use by Summer Camp, School Camp and Retreat Groups. Some 100 guests attended the grand opening ceremonies and reception.

Plain Dealer Reporter was “Camp Counselor for a Day”
PD Reporter Chuck Yarborough & Friends
The Plain Dealer’s “On the Job Training” reporter Chuck Yarborough, spent a day at Hiram House Summer Camp to see what it’s like to be a camp counselor and camper.
Yarborough was a good sport and tried his hand at grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for a cookout at Fort Tom, plus Horseback Riding, Canoeing, Archery, Alpine Climbing Wall, Farmstead, Swimming, and more.
He had a great rapport with the campers and was a big hit with boys and girls alike as he got dirty, rained on, and had lots of fun as part of Hiram House’s honorary staff.
His Plain Dealer article about his experiences appeared in the July 31, 2007 issue and can be read online at cleveland.com or
