Exciting Year Ahead
- Successful One Behind
by Russell R. Grundke, Executive Director
The year is almost over. With
just a few weeks remaining and the holidays around the corner,
I could not help but sit back for a moment and reflect on the events
that occurred at Hiram House this year.
The goals set by the Hiram House
Board of Trustees were met. The new infrastructure (sewage treatment plant,
water, gas and sewer lines) was completed. The trustee-sponsored cabin was
occupied in early September, with rave reviews from school groups that resided
in it. The Equestrian Center riding arena was started in October with high
expectations that the Equestrian Center will be ready for program use next
summer. Roads were repaired and expansion of the camp parking lot was done.
The year 2002 looks to be just as exciting
and productive as 2001. The goals set for the new year include completion of the
Equestrian Center, the building of cabin number two, and the construction of a new
Alpine Tower Adventure complex.
With the support, excitement and dedication
from all involved that was shown this year, the Hiram House Master Plan will
meet these expected goals.
On behalf of The Hiram House Board of
Trustees, Staff and Campers, I wish you each a Happy Holiday Season!

Campership Fund Needs Your Gift
Hiram House serves thousands of northeast Ohio
children each year in our Summer Camp programs.
Many of these youth are children in need who would be unable to enjoy
a life-enriching camping experience without the financial support of
our Camperships for Kids Fund.
This holiday season, please lend your support for
this worthwhile program by making a generous donation. A gift envelope is enclosed.
Hiram House is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Hiram House Today
New Equestrian Center Takes Shape

Consturction is now in progress
for the new Equestiran Center at Hiram House. Plans are to have a western
horseback riding program in operation at the camp during the coming year.
An outdoor diring ring, indoor arena and
11-horse stable will be located near the western section of the camp's
172-area wooded grounds.
The program willl be available
to Summer Camps and School Camps, as well as to area social service
agencies and community groups on the weekends or off-season.
According to Executive Director
Russell R. Grundke, horseback riding was on of the most popular activities
requested by campers in recent surveys.
Some $400,000 in funding for the new
program and facilities was received through a grant from the Billie Howland
Steffee Family Fund administered through the Cleveland Foundation.
Matching funds are being accepted to construct
Phase Two of the project - an adjoining Farmstead, featuring a barnyard with small
domestic animals.
Fall fun for all ages at the annual Pumpkin
Festival
A sea of happy faces, both young and old,
mixed among the colorful sights, lively sounds and delicious
aromas that filled the campgrounds at the Annual Hiram House Pumpkin
Festival in October.
Crowds of children and families enjoyed Jugglers, Fiddlers, Hayrides,
Cider, S'Mores, Animals, Games, Crafts, Haunted Cabin, and a host of
other favorite attractions featured.

Thousands of dollars raised by this special event
benefits the Hiram House Campership for Kids Fund each year to
aid our youth (see box at left)
The Pumpkin Festival is made possible
by the generous support of the Hiram House Staff, Board of Trustees,
Donors and Volunteers from throughout the community (see list of supporters).
On behalf of everyone associated with Hiram House and
the children we serve - our sincere thanks for making this year's event a success!
And, mark your calendars now - next year's Pumpkin Festival will be
held Sunday, October 13, 10a.m. - 4p.m.
