“Newness” Abounds at Hiram House - with Great Results!

by
Russell R. Grundke, Executive Director

The past year saw new camp staff, new Board Members, new groups, new programs and new facilities. All this “newness” created an atmosphere of excitement, enthusiasm, and stimulation within The Hiram House Family.

Hiram House hosted several new School Camp groups and Weekend Retreats in the Spring. The Summer months experienced more new Resident Campers, Day and Junior Day Campers and exciting new programs.

The “Horses on Parade” Benefit was unique, had a family focus and raised significant funds for the camp’s “Double H Ranch” Horseback Riding Program and Campership Fund.

This past Fall saw School Camp programming at its best, additional Weekend Retreats and the grandest Pumpkin Festival in thirty-five years.

I attribute this “newness” to a loyal, dedicated staff, a very active, supportive board of trustees and hundreds of unselfish, hard-working volunteers.

The Hiram House Family is strong, sound and earnest in its commitment to our youth. For this I thank you and wish all a Happy Holiday Season!

New Log Cabin in Progress at Camp

Ohio Summer Camp

Ground has been broken and construction has begun on the third of five new residential Log Cabins at Hiram House as part of a multi-year, five-millon dollar capital campaign to renovate and revitalize the camp. The 4,200 square-foot cabin will be nestled in the woods off Pioneer Circle and will accommodate up to forty-six campers plus four supervisory staff with separate sleeping quarters and restroom facilities. It also features a screened porch, central activity room, handicapped access and fire safety systems. The new Log Cabin will be open in April and available for School Camp, Summer Camp and Group Retreats.

“Horses on Parade” Benefits Hiram House

Horses on Parade - Ohio Summer Camp

This summer’s “Horses on Parade”, the annual Benefit for Hiram House, drew more than 300 guests and raised some $20,000 for the camp’s Horseback Riding Program and Campership Fund.

A delicious barbeque buffet, provided by the Winking Lizard Tavern, dessert by Normandy Catering, and a Silent Auction with fabulous prizes were huge hits. Performances by Zap Entertainment’s “The Bubble Lady” and “Zap the Wonder Chap” enthralled young and old alike, as well as photos and a parade of horses from the camp’s stables.

Our sincere thanks to all those whose generosity made the event a success.

Next year’s Benefit will be on Saturday, July 21, 2007. Details will be announced.

Pumpkin Festival - A Great Time!

Some 3,500 visitors attended the 35th annual Pumpkin Festival at Hiram House this fall, as well as hundreds of volunteers who helped staff the event.

More than $37,000 was raised to benefit the annual “Campership Fund” which helps to send children in need to a life-enriching Summer Camp. A great time was had by all who enjoyed a beautiful autumn day amid the camp’s 172 acres of colorful foliage and fall splendor.

The festival offered an assortment of attractions, activities, foods, games, crafts, animals and entertainment for all ages. Guests could tour the Haunted Hay Maze, decorate their own pumpkins, enjoy haywagon rides, taste delicious apples baked over an open fire, and much, much, more.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a great success!
